Rehearsal Dialogue
Example
Opening:
- I need to talk with you about a change in the living situation. This is not easy for me to say, but my partner is moving in, and that means I need to ask you to move out.
Key points:
- I want to be clear and respectful: this isn’t about anything you’ve done wrong.
- My partner and I have decided to live together, and I’m going to need the space for that.
- I understand this is a big change, so I want to give you as much notice as I can.
- I’m happy to discuss a reasonable move-out timeline and make the transition as smooth as possible.
- If it helps, I can work with you on practical details like timing, keys, and anything else that needs to be handed over.
Likely pushback:
- If you say, “Why is this happening now?” say: I understand this is sudden, but the situation has changed and I need to make this decision now.
- If you say, “Can’t we find another arrangement?” say: I’ve thought about it, and living together with my partner is what I’m moving forward with.
- If you say, “I don’t think this is fair,” say: I hear that, and I know it’s upsetting. I’m not saying this lightly, but I do need you to move out.
- If you say, “How much time do I have?” say: Let’s agree on a clear move-out date today so you have certainty and can plan properly.
Closing:
- I’m sorry to put you in this position, and I do appreciate the time we’ve shared living together.
- What matters now is agreeing on the move-out plan and date, so we both know where we stand.
- Let’s work out the practical next steps now.
